Chelsea captain John Terry has confirmed for the first time that talks over a new contract have broken down but insisted the situation was not irretrievable and wants to remain at the club.

However, the England captain also maintained he would not be making the next move in a bid to solve the impasse as his future and those of midfielder Frank Lampard and coach Jose Mourinho continue to cloud a sensational season for the club.

Terry still has two years to run on his current contract but is disappointed with both the length of his proposed contract extension as well as the wages on offer.

The Chelsea stalwart wants to stay at the club for life and is understood to have wanted a nine-year extension but the club have only offered him five and a salary way below his £130,000-a-week demands.

The club have yet to make a formal contract offer to Lampard and Mourinho fears he will be axed by Russian billionaire owner Roman Abramovich - even if he delivers an unprecedented quadruple of trophies this season.

Now Terry, speaking at the launch of the King of Shaves 'Young Blades' programme for 2007, revealed: "There is no movement at the minute. We've been in and the offer has been made but it has gone no further than that. I won't be me making the next move - no.

"I said to the club that I want to stay for life and it is as simple as that.  Negotiations have broken down, like they do throughout contracts, but who knows when we are going to be speaking again.

"I am not going in as I said. I've got so many more important things on my mind. It is more important for me to be on the pitch and making sure everyone is ready going into these games. That is my role as captain and Chelsea player.

"The situation is retrievable and it is not linked to what Jose does. Definitely not. He's been great for me and hopefully the club will do the right thing by him, myself and Frank Lampard - whose contract is up for renewal.

"We are a tight-knit family and we want to keep it that way for many years. If we can keep Frank and the manager, we can achieve great things at Chelsea over the years."

Despite the speculation surrounding all three, Terry remained confident they would all be starting the next season at Stamford Bridge.

He added: "I can't see anyone leaving the club in the summer at all."

But that will largely rest with Abramovich who, contrary to reports, did not visit the players' dressing room after their semi-final victory against Blackburn at Old Trafford yesterday.

Mourinho and the Russian owner hugged and congratulated each other at the end of the game but Terry confirmed Abramovich only came down to see the coach - not the players.

Terry said: "One thing we have at Chelsea is the fact we have always been very much together over the last two or three years. That has got us where we are today.

"Seeing the hug is great for every player. On and off the pitch, as a team, we are fully together."

When asked if Abramovich had put in an appearance in the dressing room though, Terry replied: "No, he didn't come down. He came down to see the manager but he didn't come in."

Chelsea now face Manchester United in the final on May 19th in what could be the second game in a triple-header.

They face each other in the Premiership on May 9th and could meet for a third time in the Champions League final on May 23rd.
