Somnus on the rise

Racing: Somnus is hard to oppose in the Listed Hopeful Stakes at Newmarket today

Racing: Somnus is hard to oppose in the Listed Hopeful Stakes at Newmarket today. Tim Easterby runs two in the race but the three-year-old, who was a top-class performer as a juvenile, certainly looks to be the stable first string in the six-furlong event.

Somnus took a while to get going this season but he has been on an upward curve recently, notching a conditions race win before landing a listed event.

The Pivotal gelding was unlucky not to land a bumper pay day last time when he got an appalling run in the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup Sprint at Ascot.

Nothing went his way that day and he flew once the gaps opened, but it was too late and he finished a three-quarter length fourth.

Somnus certainly seems to be in fine heart and he can make up for that unlucky run here.

Inglis Drever can gain some small compensation for missing the cut for Wednesday's Tote Ebor by winning the Breheny Stakes (Showcase Handicap).

Mark Prescott looked to have laid the four-year-old out for the York feature, but he failed to make the race. This one mile, six furlong event looks to be at his mercy, however.

Inglis Drever had his first run since August when winning on the all-weather in June. Then he met one too good in Manoubi over a mile and a half at Hamilton.

There was much to like about his win last time, though, when he beat Light Scent by a neck giving weight away over two furlongs shorter on this track.

Inglis Drever still looks to be a horse with plenty left to come and Prescott steps him up to 14 furlongs for the first time here and he can make it a winning start.

David Loder unveils another possible star in Sussex, who contests the EBF Blue Peter Maiden Stakes over seven furlongs.

This colt holds a number of big entries including the Dewhurst Stakes, and he is certainly bred to be a champion being by top class sire Danehill out of the fillies' Triple Crown winner Oh So Sharp.

Loder's juveniles have looked sharp of late, with two winners at York this week, and Sussex can make a winning debut.

At Newcastle, Ruby Legend can take the cantorsport.co.uk Handicap for Mary Reveley.

The five-year-old has been running well over 10 furlongs this season without actually getting his head in front, but that can change here.
