Samoa can give trainer Henry Cecil food for thought today

Samoa can give trainer Henry Cecil food for thought today. Her stable-companion Ramruma is a leading candidate for the Oaks but she can boost her own claims for the Epsom Classic in the £20,000added Sun Life of Canada Group of Companies Fillies' Trial Stakes at Newbury.

Cecil won the same race in 1997 with Yashmak and last year with Jibe and has another serious contender in Samoa, who is offered at 25 to 1 by Ladbrokes for Epsom. Ramruma is 5 to 1 second favourite.

The daughter of Rainbow Quest only made her racecourse debut at the end of last month but showed her potential with a decisive win in a Sandown maiden. Making much of the running, she stayed on strongly and beat Tricolore by two and a half lengths.

Cecil said that Samoa's win was a pleasant surprise so even better things can be expected with a run under her belt. She can take this step up to listed company in her stride.
