St Brendans 0-10 Spioraid 1-7: A draw was probably the fairest outcome to a tense Munster colleges senior football final in Carrigadrohid yesterday, where Kerry minor Mike O'Donoghue rescued St Brendan's College, Killarney, with a last-minute free against Colaiste An Spioraid Naoimh of Bishopstown.
St Brendan's led by 0-7 to 0-3 at half-time. But the game was to change dramatically on the resumption when the rain came down and the physically lighter Killarney side seemed to struggle and then, within three minutes of the restart, the Cork side were awarded two penalties.
The first saw Michael Shields's effort being saved by Jer O'Sullivan but in the ensuing scramble John Payne was deemed to have pushed a Spioraid Naoimh attacker and Paul Fitzgerald made no mistake with that spot kick.
When Fitzgerald converted a 37th-minute free the sides were level and a superb Denis Crowley effort had the Cork side in front with 10 minutes to go.
Spioraid Naoimh then had Brian Noonan red-carded and St Brendan's rallied late on as Kieran O'Leary was fouled 35 metres out and O'Donoghue kept his cool to score the equaliser. The sides will meet at the same venue on Easter Monday.
