Turin heroes in Irish team
GOLF: Five of the six players that captured the European Team Championship for Ireland at Royal Park Golf Club, Turin, are included in the team for the Home Internationals, as Ireland look for their first win in the event since 2003 when they triumphed at Ballybunion.
Jonathan Caldwell, Paul Cutler, Niall Kearney, Shane Lowry and Paul O'Hanlon were victorious in Italy, winning back-to-back titles for Ireland while Gareth Shaw, the sixth member of the team, has since turned professional.
There are four new caps included on the team - Eoin Arthurs, Alan Dunbar, Dara Lernihan and Cathal O'Malley all get their chance to impress following successful seasons. Alan Dunbar's involvement as playing captain for a victorious Irish side in the recent Boys' Home Internationals is rewarded with his first senior international call up.
Cian Curley and Simon Ward, who both played in the Home Internationals last year make up the 11-man team.
Del Porto targets top 10 after outgunning Roddick
TENNIS: Argentine teenager Juan Martin Del Potro has targeted a place in the world's top 10 after picking up his third consecutive title on Sunday. The 19-year-old outgunned former world number one Andy Roddick 6-1 7-6 in the final of the ATP event in Los Angeles, a result that will propel him to a projected ranking of 17th.
Having won on clay in Stuttgart and Kitzbuhel in July, Del Potro arrived in Los Angeles high on confidence but the manner of his victory suggests bigger and better things could follow sooner rather than later.
"I think I am playing very good and my confidence is very very high," Del Potro said. "I hope to be good for the US Open because it's the most important tournament."
Del Potro, among the tallest players on the tour, said he had been working with his coach Franco Davin to improve all areas of his game, particularly his mental strength.
Against American Roddick in front of a partisan crowd, he showed maturity well beyond his years to extend his winning streak to 14 matches.
"If I want to be in the top 10 I have to beat them, these players," Del Potro said. "I think the difference is in your mind or your physical state.
"If I continue in this way, I have a chance to be in the top 10. I don't know when - if I am still beating Roddick and top-10 players, for sure I will be."
The US Open starts on August 25th.
Sri Lanka take series 2-1
CRICKET: Sri Lanka captain Mahela Jayawardene said a true team performance was the key to Sri Lanka's 2-1 series win over India.
Sri Lanka won the third and deciding Test in Colombo by eight wickets yesterday after bowling out India for 268 on the fourth day and then knocking off the 122-run target with ease.
"It was a very hard-fought series that drained a lot out of us," Jayawardene said. "We showed a lot of character."
