But team doctors expect the 29-year-old, who missed the entire championship last year due to a knee ligament injury, will be able to join in with his team-mates in the next few days.

White was last night named as Frank Hadden's skipper for the Murrayfield game.

There was no room for Edinburgh centre Ben Cairns, standoff Phil Godman or Glasgow wing Thom Evans. However, uncapped Edinburgh centre Nick de Luca made the cut.

Belton's return a boost ahead of Italy game

Ireland women's coach John O'Sullivan has named an experienced team to face Italy on Friday at Templeville Road (2.30pm).

With the return from injury of captain Sarahjane Belton, O'Sullivan has left his five uncapped players on bench duty, with the starting line-up as strong as any Ireland have fielded in recent years.

The back-line sees the return of Munster's stand-out centre Patrique Kelly, who hasn't played since taking a year out after the 2006 World Cup, while the positioning of Belton at fullback means Ireland will be strong on the counter-attack.

Up front there is also a settled look to the pack, with Germaine Healy providing a wealth of experience in the secondrow.

Eimear O'Sullivan starts at flanker despite playing just two club matches this season.

An excellent performance in a recent trial game propelled her back in to the frame.

IRELAND:S Belton (capt), L Cantwell, P Kelly, S Houston, G Davitt, J O'Sullivan, T Rosser, F Coghlan, J Limbert, M Barrett, C Mahon, G Healy, E O'Sullivan, S Ryan, O Brennan. Subs: Gillian Bourke, Yvonne Nolan, Kate O'Loughlin, Louise Austin, Louise Beamish, Niamh Briggs, Amy Davis.
