UEFA CUP PREVIEW - St Patrick's Athletic (2) v IF Elfsborg (2):JOHN McDONNELL says his St Patrick's Athletic players are on the cusp of providing the club with the biggest game in its history.
That's the prize for getting through tonight against Swedish side Elfsborg in a tie manager McDonnell believes is very much in the balance after St Patrick's came from 2-0 down in Borås a fortnight ago.
"I'd stress that it's going to be difficult, but if we get through this round the next game will probably be the most important game in the history of Pat's," said McDonnell.
"I think the profile of the club definitely gets a lift and it's great for everyone; me, the players, the people that work at the club and the fans, especially. It's great for everyone.
"The (Uefa) co-efficient for the league is very important as well and if we could get through it would be fantastic."
Though they have the benefit of their two away goals, McDonnell insists he will not send his team out to play for a draw.
"Absolutely not," said McDonnell. "There is too much at stake. We can't be hanging on. We've definitely got to try to score."
Damien Lynch again captains the side in the absence of the suspended Jamie Harris while fellow defender Joe O'Cearuill is also banned. Winger Derek O'Brien should make the bench following an ankle injury while striker John Murphy leg, has a slight back problem but should be passed fit.
If St Pat's do qualify for the first round of the Uefa Cup tonight they could face a very big headache.
Richmond Park, though adequate to stage tonight's second qualifying round tie, is unsuitable under Uefa criteria to host a further round.
