CAVAN SFC FINAL Kingscourt Stars 1-13 Cavan Gaels 1-9: RANK OUTSIDERS Kingscourt Stars awoke from near comatose beginnings at Kingspan/Breffni Park yesterday to tear the script into shreds in the Cavan SFC final.
Cavan Gaels failed to build on Michael Lyng’s vision and long-distance kicked pass in the 16th minute which was finished by Seán Johnston to the net.
Gaels’ Niall Smith crashed his shot off the crossbar in the 21st minute while Kingscourt’s Barry Reilly missed a goal chance on 27 minutes when Mark Leddy and Karol Crotty blocked on the line.
Stars’ Ryan McCormack converted a free 90 seconds after the restart to leave just a goal between the sides, 1-5 to 0-5, and in the 51st minute Mark Leddy fouled Barry Reilly and the referee pointed to the spot; McCormack converted.
Behind for the first time, 1-7 to 1-10, the Gaels worked hard to keep their title but Joe MacMahon fisted over the insurance point.
