CHARITY CUP FINAL:Young Munster 12 Shannon 9: THE BOOT of Willie Staunton won the Limerick Charity Cup for Young Munster, who beat their great city rivals in a try-less final which went to extra-time at Thomond Park last night.
The all-important kick came in the last act of play at the end of the first half of extra-time.
Shannon went in front after 12 minutes when outhalf Ben Sergeant landed a penalty.
But the lead lasted only five minutes when Shannon were penalised and Willie Staunton made no mistake.
Another penalty by Sergeant after 23 minutes had Shannon back in front but they failed to add to their score when Young Munster were reduced to 14 when fullback Ray Moloney was sin-binned for obstruction after 32 minutes and it remained 6-3 at the interval.
Shannon edged 9-3 in front after 43 minutes but penalties by Staunton in the 53rd and 61st minutes tied it up again.
Four minutes into stoppage time Sergeant had a chance to earn a dramatic win but his penalty effort drifted wide.
