Aston Villa manager John Gregory is confident that Republic of Ireland defender Steve Staunton will sign a new deal by the weekend after admitting: "I thought he had decided he was on his way out."

Gregory is scheduled to have what he hopes will be final talks with Staunton and is optimistic he will sign a four-year deal, worth around £20,000 a week.
