Dave Stockton, right, captain of the victorious 1991 US Ryder Cup team, will be competing at Mount Wolseley on July 30th. The two-time USPGA champion is in a quality line-up for the Christy O'Connor Jnr Classic, in aid of a local charity in Tullow, Co Carlow.
After retaining the Senior British Championship at Royal Co Down last year, O'Connor, extreme right, went by helicopter directly to Mount Wolseley where, in an impromptu golf event, he raised £10,000.
"I'm hoping to raise five times that figure, now that's we're properly organised," he said yesterday.
Stockton will follow the same route O'Connor took from Newcastle 12 months ago. "I'm hoping he'll be joined in the chopper by a few other star names," added the Galwayman, who is making steady progress from a broken left leg. He may be able to walk again by the end of the month.
Meanwhile, a par at the first tie hole was sufficient to secure victory for Allan Doyle over Doug Tewell in Ford Senior Players Championship at the TPC of Michigan on Sunday.
Victory was worth $375,000 to Doyle, who will be remembered here from the Walker Cup of 1991 at Portmarnock where he partnered Jay Sigel to a foursomes victory over Paul McGinley and Padraig Harrington. It was his sixth senior title and second senior "major", coming after the Senior PGA Championship two years ago. That success on this scale has been possible for a player such a short, ugly swing, gives hopes to us all.
