These two will have to do it all over again and perhaps that is the way it should be in this Leinster schools Senior Cup Section A first round encounter at Station Road yesterday.
A strong wind created all sorts of problems for both teams and chances were just as likely to develop through dropped balls and inaccurate passes as they were through creative play.
That was how St David's first try came. Patrick Heffernan took a chance and stepped up to intercept a Dundalk movement just outside his own 22 and he had the pace and stamina to go all the way to the line.
However, De La Salle responded in the best manner possible. Number eight Mark Dorrian forced his way over for a try converted by out-half Michael John McKevitt.
In the 21st minute Dundalk took the lead when scrum-half Fergal Grant created a try for his winger Jonathan Gray with a clever inside pass.
That did not look nearly enough as the players changed ends. Yet, it was all St David's could do to muster up a solitary try and it came from their most constructive source in out-half Brian O'Sullivan.
He dived over beside the posts and made the conversion himself to put St David's on level terms. That was as good as it got for the Greystones side as they struggled to break down a fierce Dundalk defence.
