After three high-profile car race meetings, the motorcyclists take over Mondello Park this weekend with up to 200 riders competing in what amounts to a virtual feast of short-circuit racing. There are 10 races listed for tomorrow and 13 on Sunday for the Irish Clubmans Championship and the National Short Circuit Championship.
Heading the entry are Ulsterman Michael Swann on a 1000cc Yamaha, winner of last week's Dundrod 150 and reigning Irish Short Circuit champion, Hilton Hincks (Tramore), winner at Mondello and Aghadowey on a 250cc Honda and Emlyn Hughes (Dublin), who scored two recent Mondello wins.
Also competing are Richard Britton on 1000cc and 600cc Yamahas, Michael Laverty on a 750cc Suzuki, Derek Wilson and Dwyer Agnew on Hondas. All racing will take place over the intermediate circuit. After racing tomorrow, a Supermoto will take place (5 p.m. to 8 p.m.).
Meanwhile, following the tragic death of top Ulster road racer Gary Dynes at last year's Monaghan races, the memory of the five-times 250cc Irish road racing champion will be perpetuated by a new trophy and championship sponsored by the Ardee Road Racing Supporters' Club.
The Irish road racing season finally starts with the Skerries 100 races on July 7th-8th. All of the Northern meetings have so far been cancelled, but there is hope that the Ulster Grand Prix will go ahead as scheduled on August 18th at Dundrod.
The 500 Motor Racing Club of Ireland has received a bumper entry for tomorrow's motor racing at Kirkistown. John O'Hara, Noel Roddy and Vivion Daly are the leading trio in Formula Europa.
In the US, Donegal driver Damien Faulkner competes in round five of the Indy Lights series at Portland International Raceway in Oregon. Faulkner recently impressed the establishment with victory on the Texas "oval".
