The BBC have drawn up contingency plans to try to save their coverage of the World Cup.
Striking technicians have warned they will pull the plug on France '98 and also black out other sporting highlights such as Wimbledon and Royal Ascot.
The technicians, members of the Bectu union, yesterday mounted a 24-hour stoppage, taking some of the BBC's flagship news programmes off the air.
The strike action was taken amid fears among staff that the service is being privatised and that a shake-up within the BBC could lead to job losses.
