Time has finally been called on the racing career of last year's unbeaten champion two-year-old Teofilo who was officially retired yesterday.
The Jim Bolger-trained colt never raced again after making it five wins from five runs as a juvenile in last season's Dewhurst Stakes at Newmarket, a streak that made him winter favourite for both the 2,000 Guineas and the Derby. However, a knee problem discovered on the run up to the 2,000 Guineas last spring prevented Teofilo running in the classics and a statement by Bolger yesterday said: "Following an unsatisfactory scan it has been decided to retire Teofilo with immediate effect."
No details of a future stud career for the son of Galileo were released.
Light Shift, Peeping Fawn and ante-post favourite Mandesha are set to star in a fascinating clash of the generations in Saturday's Blue Square Nassau Stakes at Goodwood.
The first-named pair are at one-all in having won the Epsom Oaks and Irish Oaks respectively.
