The president of the GAA, Joe McDonagh, yesterday described this year as being "unique" in the history of hurling. He was speaking at the official GAA lunch for the four All-Ireland finalists in the Burlington Hotel. He said a total of 1.5 million people came to Croke Park, "the field of dreams", this year.
McDonagh thanked all of the players who participated in the hurling championship games this year.
"They made it a unique year. We have spoken of golden era's, we have spoken of Riverdances, but this must surely be the greatest ever year for hurling in this association."
"This," he said, "was assisted by the wonderful displays of skilful artistry that we saw from so many players. I wish to thank all of the hurlers of this country for the feast and festival of hurling we have had this season."
He commended RTE for "the wonderful work they have done this year, the first year ever for 22 Sundays in a row of coverage".
Incidentally, had Galway minors won last Sunday's final tradition would have been waived to allow the president present the Irish Press Cup to his son and Galway captain Eoin. Normally the presentation is the function of the Bishop of Cashel and Emily, Dermot Clifford.
