On July 7th 1944, Tony Jacklin was born in Scunthorpe and went on to become an apprentice fitter before turning professional in 1962. Victory in the 1968 Greater Jacksonville Open made him the first British player to win an official US tournament since Ted Ray's US Open triumph of 1920. Then came the 1969 British Open and the 1970 US Open and more than 30 years on, he made a comeback to competitive golf in the AIB Irish Seniors Open last May.

Reflecting on his playing career, he said: "There were two players who inspired me above all others: one was Roberto de Vicenzo and the other was Christy O'Connor. I can't explain it, but I always loved playing golf with Senior."

TEASER: In a match between A and B, A was unsure of his rights at a hole. Neither A nor B was aware that Rule 3-3 applies only in strokeplay, so A played a second ball and holed out with both balls. At the end of the round, the matter was referred to the committee. What is the ruling?

ANSWER: A second ball played in matchplay is a wrong ball. Accordingly, A would have lost the hole had B claimed it under Rule 2-5 before either player had played from the next tee. However, B made no claim. Therefore, the score with A's original ball counts.
