On August 18th 1990, a 17-year-old French girl, Sandrine Mendiburu, became the first foreign national to win the US Girls' Junior Championship since its inception in 1949. She did it by beating Vicki Goetze, also 17, by 3 and 2 in the final at Manasquan River GC, New Jersey. Nine years later, Mme Mendiburu captured the Irish Women's Open at Letterkenny GC, after a four-way play-off with Raquel Carriedo, Laura Davies and Elisabeth Esterl.

Teaser: A player's ball lies against a movable obstruction. Before removing the obstruction, the player marks the position of his ball so that he will be able to replace the ball precisely, if the ball moves when the obstruction is removed. The player removes the obstruction and the ball does not move. However, the ball moves when the ball-marker is removed. That is the ruling?

Answer: The ball-marker is itself a movable obstruction. Accordingly, under Rule 24-1, the player incurs no penalty and he must replace the ball.
