Digest/US TOUR: Sergio Garcia received a timely boost for next week's US Open when he surged to victory in the Booz Allen Classic in Potomac, Maryland yesterday with a final round of 65.
The Spaniard finished on 14-under-par 270 and a two-shot victory over Davis Love, Ben Crane and Adam Scott.
Garcia scorched the front nine at the historic Congressional Golf Club with four birdies and an eagle to go to six-under on the day and 15-under for the tournament and came home in level par after dropping a shot at the last.
WOMEN'S AMATEUR: Claire Coughlan, who failed in a brave bid to lift the British Women's Open Amateur title at Littlestone on the Kent coast on Saturday, is one of three Irish players in the Britain and Ireland team to defend the Vagliano Trophy against the Continent of Europe in Chantilly on July 22nd and 23rd. The 25-year-old former Irish champion and Curtis Cup player from Cork is joined in the nine-strong line-up by the revitalised Martina Gillen from Beaverstown and 31-year-old Tricia Mangan from Ennis.
Meanwhile, Coughlan failed to become the first Irish player for two decades - since Lilian Behan at Ganton in 1985 - to win the British Open Amateur Championship.
Coughlan went down by 3 and 2 in the final to Sweden's 2004 champion Louise Stahle, who ended a 30-year hoodoo for defending champions by becoming the first player since Mickey Walker in 1971-72 to record back-to-back triumphs.
WOMEN'S US TOUR: Annika Sorenstam won the ninth major of her distinguished career when taking the McDonald's LPGA Championship with a final round of one over par 73 and a total of 277.
Sorenstam's 11-under-par total of 277 gave her a three-shot win over amateur Michele Wie.
SENIORS TOUR: Scotland's Sam Torrance closed with a level par 72 to cruise to a four-shot victory over England's David J Russell at the Irvine Whitlock Jersey Seniors Classic at La Moye.
The 51-year-old former Ryder Cup captain began the final round with a three-shot advantage over Russell after opening rounds 65 and 68 and he never looked likely to relinquish that lead after consecutive birdies at the fourth and fifth holes. Denis O'Sullivan was best of the Irish on one-over-par 216.
LET TOUR: Veronica Zorzi from Italy claimed her maiden professional victory and €45,000 in prize winnings at Arras Open de France Dames, at Le Golf d'Arras, St Aubin yesterday.
The 24-year-old from Verona fired a final round 68 to finish at 12-under-par, one shot clear of England's Trish Johnson. Ireland's Rebecca Coakley finished on three-over-par 291 after rounds of 73, 73, 71 and 74.
CHALLENGE TOUR: Michael Hoey and Justin Kehoe finished in a tie for 51st place the Thomas Björn Open presented by Multidata on a week to forget for the Irish contingent.
Hoey carded a final round 76, while Kehoe posted 74, both players recording 19 over par 303 aggregate scores to finish 15 shots behind winner Toni Karjalainen of Finland, who took the title after a final round 75.
CHAMPIONS TOUR: Gil Morgan and Dana Quigley shared the clubhouse lead during the final round of the Bayer Advantage Classic when play was suspended for the second day due to inclement weather.
