"We have a long tradition of supporting team sports throughout the island of Ireland and this is a wonderful opportunity for us to build a partnership with the ICU and the team.

"Initially our contract is for a year but we hope it will be the beginning of a longer-term relationship.

"Last year we sponsored the one-day internationals against the West Indies and this year the game against Yorkshire. Working with the ICU has been a very positive experience for us and one we're keen to continue," he said.

Peter Thompson, chief executive of the ICU said he was delighted to welcome the bank as team sponsors, particularly at this potentially historic time in Irish cricket.

"This one-year deal is worth a substantial five-figure sum and will give a great boost to cricket in this country," said Thompson.

"The ICC event in Ireland this year will enable teams from all over the world to experience not just the quality of our game but the quality of life both in Northern Ireland and the Republic.

"Being able to announce that Bank of Ireland is on board as our sponsor will be a fillip to all our players and officials as we begin this crucial series of matches," he said.

Ireland's game against Bermuda gets under way in Civil Service CC, Stormont, today at 10.45am. Tomorrow they take on Uganda in Comber.

The top five teams in this 12-country event will qualify for the 2007 World Cup with the ICC Trophy final taking place in Castle Avenue on July 13th.
