Top weight for Gales Cavalier

The David Gandolfo-trained Gales Cavalier is set to carry top weight in next Wednesday's Compaq Galway Plate

The David Gandolfo-trained Gales Cavalier is set to carry top weight in next Wednesday's Compaq Galway Plate. The British raider was confirmed a runner yesterday in the £65,000 festival showpiece, despite Merry Gale's absence meaning he will have to carry 12st.

A spokesman for the Gandolfo stable said: "He's an intended runner and Adrian Maguire has been booked for the ride. The only proviso is that he wouldn't like the ground to be very soft. With what we've read, we've assumed that he would have to carry top weight anyway."

Before then, Mark Johnston will send Fruits Of Love for the Meld Stakes at the Curragh on Saturday.

Fruits Of Love was the winner of the Group Two Princess Of Wales Stakes at Newmarket last time out and Johnston said: "I've just seen the acceptors and I think he will run. He wants good ground so I would not send him if it turned soft."

Aidan O'Brien's Risk Material has also been left in the Meld but O'Brien will decide today if the colt will travel for Ascot's King George VI And Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes instead.
