Trinity on the move in quest for promotion

MEN’S HOCKEY: HAVING TO make many trips to Mullingar hasn’t been part of Trinity’s decorated past

MEN'S HOCKEY:HAVING TO make many trips to Mullingar hasn't been part of Trinity's decorated past. That this weekend's cross-county dash to Tullamore Harriers will be enjoyed is a given for the young Division Two side that has continued to stay strong at College Park, where the club continues to put out four teams.

Trinity, however, have been nomadic these past few years and because the playing surface at Santry is unsuitable for hockey, the club has had to rent out pitches from Three Rock Rovers. Over the past three years that has taken a financial toll on the club.

Keeping with tradition as well as a much cheaper option, the fourth XI continue to play their matches on the hallowed turf in front of the pavilion at College Park, a surface regarded as the best in the country when grass was the surface of choice. But the club are hopeful with the planned redevelopment of the Santry grounds that a suitable pitch will be provided for the senior team, who are aiming to earn promotion to Division One. The new synthetic pitch relies on funding coming through.

Trinity also had their sports scholarships this week and of the 22 students included, three were hockey players. Organised by Trinity’s Department of Sport and Dublin University Central Athletic Club, the scholarship programme aims to assist talented students develop their sporting potential as well as assist in their pursuit of academic success.
