Twenty 20 play-offs attract young and old

CRICKET: Tomorrow sees the climax to the LHW Twenty20 Cup at Railway Union Club

CRICKET:Tomorrow sees the climax to the LHW Twenty20 Cup at Railway Union Club. The day starts at 11am with the first of the semi-finals, between Merrion and The Hills, sharply followed at 2pm with Clontarf against Old Belvedere. The final is scheduled to start at 5pm.

In the Twenty20 tradition, cricket is only part of the day. There is a strong push to get youngsters into the ground, and they enter free, as do adults with four or more children in tow.

Should the games on the pitch not capture the imagination, maybe the bouncy castle, tug-o-war, long-throw competition or barbecue will.

Elsewhere, an Ireland A team take on Denmark at Stormont today and at Muckamore tomorrow.

The team will be led by Andrew White and nine players of the 13-man squad have senior international experience.

The four new faces are Phil Eaglestone, Peter Connell, Andrew Poynter and Reinhardt Strydom.

Eaglestone has impressed when opening the bowling for Strabane in the past two seasons, while Connell has regularly played a pivotal role in the North Down attack.

Poynter was part of the Ireland under-19 team in Sri Lanka last year and played for the under-23 side last week in Glasgow.

Strydom has been in prolific form for North County.

A team from the same squad will be chosen to play MCC at Malahide in a three-day game starting on July 31st.
