University College Cork made history at O'Brien's Bridge in Co Clare yesterday when they won Wylie Cup intervarsity rowing championship for the first time.
The strength of Trinity in men's rowing was shown by their win in the senior eights, where they had a length and a half to spare over UCD, with Queen's in third place, and and the senior fours. But UCC won the intermediate and novice eights, and this was enough to take the Wylie Cup.
Trinity, however, held on to the Bank of Ireland Cup for women by virtue of their wins in the senior and intermediate fours. The only significant titles which escaped them were the intermediate and novice eights.
Relative newcomers Cork Institute of Technology caused a major surprise in the men's events, with wins in the intermediate four and intermediate pair and the novice double and single sculls.
