Second-half goals from Lucy Cotter and Barbara Fitzgerald gave hosts UCD victory over the University of Ulster, Jordanstown, in the Chilean Cup final at Belfield yesterday. It was a deserved win for UCD who had ousted holders UCC in the semi-finals earlier in the day, beating them 2-0 with goals from Katie Fraser and Jean McDonnell. Jordanstown defeated the University of Limerick 3-0 to reach the final.
Despite having the bulk of the possession in the first half of the final, UCD failed to break Jordanstown's resistance, with Hilda Maguire's 15th minute goal-bound deflection off Ciara O'Brien's free hit the only occasion goalkeeper Ruth Hunter was called in to action.
The deadlock was finally broken seven minutes into the second half when the rebound from Katie Tyrell's short-corner strike was forced home by right winger Cotter. Eleven minutes later Fitzgerald sealed the victory by turning O'Brien's free hit from the edge of the circle past Hunter.
NUIG completed a fine tournament, during which they conceded just one goal in six matches, by beating Queens 2-1 in the Plate final with Pamela Ryan scoring both goals.
Both UCD and Trinity have been given an extra day to recover from their Intervarsity exertions before returning to league action - UCD play Glenanne on Sunday while Trinity face Corinthian in Santry.
The top match in Leinster this weekend is between Pembroke Wanderers and Loreto at Serpentine Avenue, with both sides anxious for victory to maintain their challenge at the top. Hermes are away to Railway Union while Old Alexandra will hope to bounce back from their defeat by the champions last weekend when they play Genesis.
