After the disappointment of losing to Leinster on the opening day of the Boys' Interprovincial golf championships at Birr, Connacht recovered yesterday to decisively beat Ulster 6-3. They were much too strong for the fancied Ulster side in both the singles and foursomes.
Irish international Sean McTernan was again the Connacht hero. He won both his matches on Tuesday, and yesterday he beat Ulster's Darren Crowe by 4 and 3 and then halved his foursomes match. The Connacht side laid the foundation for their victory with a 2 1/2 to 1/2 lead after the morning foursomes and they increased their lead in the afternoon singles which they won by 3 1/2 to 2 1/2. Leinster, who were so impressive on the opening day, were, surprisingly, beaten 5-4 by Munster in the second match. The Leinster boys started well and led 2-1 after the morning foursomes, thanks to excellent victories from Roger Healy and Dave Gannon and Paul McDonald and Mark Kynes. But they fell apart in the singles which they lost 4-2.
All four provinces have one victory each going into today's final round.
