Michael Kinane failed to register the victory expected on Henry Cecil's Killer Instinct, but did at least leave Ascot with a 31 1/2 to 1 double with Sandbaggedagain and Blessingindisguise for the somewhat less-glamorous stable of Mick Easterby.
Sandbaggedagain initiated the double as he romped away with the two-mile John Guest Brown Jack Stakes (Handicap).
Kinane sent his partner to the front inside the final furlong and the four-year-old swept away from his opponents to win by four lengths from Olivo, with half to The Blues Academy.
Easterby was back in the winners' enclosure half an hour later after Blessingindisguise had taken the following City Index Rated Stakes.
Kinane pushed the five-year-old through a gap 100 yards from the finish of the five-furlong contest and the pair enjoyed a half-length call over Bayleaf to justify 4 to 1 favouritism.
Killer Instinct, as low as 8 to 1 with Ladbrokes for next year's 2,000 Guineas yesterday morning, succumbed to Compton Admiral.
When Kinane, deputising for the suspended Kieren Fallon, sent the 4 to 9 debutant favourite to the front with just over a furlong to run, all seemed well.
But Pat Eddery on Compton Admiral, giving first-season trainer Gerard Butler just his second success, covered the move. Compton Admiral, the 7 to 2 second favourite, edged ahead as the pair passed the furlong marker and by the line had worn to a one-length advantage.
Corals lengthened Killer Instinct's price for next year's Classic to 12 to 1.
