SIGERSON CUP QUARTER-FINALS: UUJ 2-19 Carlow IT 1-8:UUJ SERVED impressive notice of their credentials when they cruised into the semi-finals in Belfield yesterday. For power and precision, there was a gulf in class between the teams and Adrian McGuckian's men, winners in 2008, look like they will be a handful in the competition.
Jordanstown were 1-3 to 0-0 up after seven minutes, with Monaghan’s Colm McManus palming to the net in the seventh minute after great build-up work by Tyrone’s Matthew Donnelly. Craig Rogers from Laois was hauled down for a penalty in the eighth minute which he converted to open Carlow’s account – but in truth they were way off the pace. Jordanstown were causing mayhem attacking down their right wing, where Armagh’s Kevin Dyas was having a field day. Diarmuid McNulty and Peter Hughes were in fine form and by half-time UUJ were 1-10 to 1-5 up and would have been out of sight but for a flurry of wides.
Daithí Carroll had brought Carlow back into contention with some late frees but Jordanstown moved up a gear at the start of the second half, Donnelly, Hughes and Niall Holly reeling off three quick points.
Carlow physically struggled to compete and didn’t register a score until Wexford’s Ben Brosnan pointed in the 55th minute.
