Manchester United hope to complete Ruud van Nistelrooy's transfer this week. United will resume negotiations with PSV Eindhoven today and they are confident of a successful outcome, possibly by the middle of the week.
The clubs have yet to settle on a fee and PSV are insisting they still want £18.5 million sterling, which was the figure agreed last year before the deal collapsed when van Nistelrooy badly injured his knee.
United may not be willing to pay this much for the Dutch international striker, who has played only six games since returning from his cruciate ligament injury.
United have already drawn up plans for their summer spending spree and chief executive Peter Kenyon claims they intend to be as strong as ever next season.
"The plans are in place and we know what we are looking to do and van Nistelrooy is the start. I think we've said it would be more than one signing and it's a question of the right people and not just a question of quantity. We want the right people to fit in with our existing players."
Teddy Sheringham insists United's pursuit of van Nistelrooy will not force him out of Old Trafford. The 35-year-old striker's new one-year contract, worth an estimated £35,000 a week, remains unsigned.
Roy Keane will not face any more punishment than the mandatory three-match ban for his latest red card.
However, the fact that it was his second dismissal of the season means he will be banned for four matches, which will rule him out of the start of next season.
The Manchester United captain was sent off in Saturday's derby with Manchester City for a high tackle on Alfie Haaland.
A spokesman for the English FA said: "We have not seen the referee's report yet. However, assuming Roy Keane was sent off for violent conduct, it will constitute the mandatory three-match suspension."
Keane's red card was the eighth sending off of his eight-year Manchester United career and the fourth time he has been dismissed by referee David Elleray.
