Jozef Venglos yesterday relaunched his club management career at Celtic, courtesy of a glowing tribute from Aston Villa chairman Doug Ellis.
Celtic managing director Fergus McCann contacted Venglos's employer during the 1990-91 season before appointing Wim Jansen's successor on a three-year deal. Venglos was at France 98 as a coaching advisor to FIFA but has been tempted by the opportunity to prove himself after what was viewed as a failure at Villa Park eight years ago.
The 62-year-old Slovakian, operating in a consultancy capacity until his work permit formalities are complete, takes a post that Gerard Houllier and Tommy Svensson rejected and Jansen resigned from. Venglos guided Czechoslovakia to the 1976 European Championships. Part of his brief at Celtic is to find his own long-term replacement.
Shelbourne's UEFA Cup clash with Rangers at Tranmere Rovers' Prenton Park next Wednesday will be broadcast live on Eurosport. Kick-off is at 8.00 p.m.
