WOMEN'S SOCCER:MARY WALDRON converted a stoppage-time penalty in Saturday night's FAI Umbro Women's Cup final at Richmond Park to seal a 2-1 victory for St Francis over local Dublin rivals Peamount United.
The striker was given the chance to clinch the first national title for St Francis after referee Paula Brady adjudged that Peamount defender Nicola Synnott had handled the ball on the goal-line.
St Francis were trailing after 69 minutes when Peamount grabbed the opener through Stacey McGlone's shot from the edge of the box which struck the underside of the crossbar on its way in.
St Francis hit back two minutes later after Sharon Cullen seized on a defensive mix-up to drill a low shot from 10 yards past goalkeeper Linda Meehan. Waldron might have won it for St Francis in the final minute with a volley from 20 yards hit the post. However, her chance of glory arrived a minute into added time through the penalty award.
St Francis manager Pat Heffernan said: "I'm proud of my players for recovering from going a goal behind to win the cup . . . It also means we qualify for next season's Uefa Cup."
