Waterford United 2 Bohemians 0: Bohemians' poor start to the season took a further twist when Dessie Byrne put through his own goal and fellow defender Ken Oman was sent off in last night's game at the RSC.
It was a win Waterford deserved as substitute Willie Doyle added a stunning second goal from a last minute free-kick to move them top of the Premier Division table.
While Bohemians started well, it was Waterford who spurned the two clearest openings of a tight first half. On both occasions the Bohemians defence failed to deal with free-kicks. On 27 minutes David Mulcahy blazed over the Bohemians bar from 10 yards after Alan Reynolds's free-kick was allowed to bounce through to him. The defence was again absent six minutes later when Daryl Murphy, again from a Reynolds free-kick, sent a weak header straight at goalkeeper Matt Gregg.
So brittle was the visitors' defence, goals had to come and they duly did with Byrne deflecting Murphy's cross into his own net on 61 minutes. Oman was sent off 10 minutes from time for a bad challenge on Doyle, who had the last say, cracking home a stunning free-kick.
