Dermot Weld's Beckon The King caused a surprise when winning the $200,000 Steinlen Stakes (1m turf) at Gulfstream Park, Florida, on Sunday.
Starting 20 to 1, Beckon The King was held up in the early stages but came through smoothly to win by a length and half from Hap to scoop the $120,000 first prize. Super Red was third, a further length back.
Meanwhile, smart middle-distance colt Make No Mistake is to leave Weld to race in Florida. The four-year-old, winner of the Meld Stakes at the Curragh in June, finished down the field in last month's BMW Cox Plate in Australia.
"He will be given a short rest following his return from Australia and then will be flown out to join Christophe Clement," said Stan Cosgrove, manager of the Moyglare Stud Farm.
