A NICKIE SYMMONS goal seven minutes in to the first period of extra time gave Wesley College victory, for the second successive year, in the Leinster Schoolgirls' Junior A hockey cup final at Grange Road yesterday.

Loreto Abbey, Dalkey, took a sixth-minute lead against the cup holders, through Ciara Willis, but Wesley, largely inspired by Symmons and Sarah Walker in midfield, kept their composure and fought their way back in to the game.

Davina Porter was denied an equaliser for Wesley mid-way through the first half by a superb Nora Costigan save, but five minutes after the restart Vicky Wall levelled when she deflected a fierce cross from the right past the Dalkey goalkeeper.

The winning goal came from a Wesley short corner that was played out to Symmons, standing wide right at the edge of the circle, and her shot found its way past Costigan and a Dalkey defender on the line.
