Two goals in the final four minutes of extra time gave Westmeath a dramatic win over Kildare in a quarter-final replay at Mullingar on Saturday.
The Lilywhites looked the more impressive side in the opening half and even though they faced a stiff breeze, deservedly led at the break by 0-7 to 0-5.
In a low-scoring second half, Westmeath eventually edged in front and indeed it was a relieved Kildare team which saw Colm Reilly shoot over a levelling point two minutes from the end of normal time.
Kildare regained the initiative in the first period of extra time and, boosted by a John Doyle goal, built up a 1-12 to 0-11 advantage.
However, Westmeath, inspired by the outstanding Des Dolan, finished in style and goals from Aidan Canning and Joe Fallon saw them run out winners to secure a semi-final meeting against Wicklow.
