No 30: Chris Morris

Club career: Born in Newquay, Morris represented Cornish Schools in cricket, South West Counties in rugby and played football for the England Under-18 side. He was set for a PE course in Cheltenham when Jack Charlton took him to Sheffield Wednesday in 1982. Spent five seasons at Hillsborough before moving to Celtic in 1987, where he was a member of the double-winning side the following year. In 1992 he moved to Middlesborough, making over 100 appearances for the club before he was forced to quit, aged 33, with a knee injury in the summer of 1997. Was granted a benefit game by Middlesborough last year - 12,000 turned up for the match against Nottingham Forest.

International career: Made his debut against Israel (the night David Kelly scored a hat-trick on his debut) at Dalymount Park in 1987 and went on to win another 34 caps. Was an ever-present in the 1988 European Championships and 1990 World Cup teams but a cruciate ligament injury ruled him out of contention for a place in the 1994 World Cup squad. Won his final cap against Wales at Tolka Park in February 1993.

Where is he now? Worked as a match summariser for Middlesborough radio station TFM after his retirement but has since built up a successful property business, renovating and selling old houses in the Teesside region. After a year out of the game, he returned to play for Northern League side Billingham Synthonia, for whom former Irish and Middlesborough team-mate Bernie Slaven also plays.
