Rodney Goggins lifted the world under-21 championship in Cairo on Saturday defeating Rolf De Jong in a best of 21-frames affair. His 11-4 victory sees him elevated to Class Two athlete status, the first to be handed out to a snooker player in Ireland since the grading system was introduced.
As well as the trophy, Goggins will receive a grant of £7,500 and automatic entry to next month's World Amateur Championships in Papua New Guinea. Goggins, from the 147 Club in Wexford, adds his name to an impressive list that includes Ronnie O'Sullivan, Peter Ebdon and Ken Doherty. His triumph over De Jong made it 11 straight wins in the tournament which began two weeks ago.
The Irishman held a 9-2 overnight lead over the Dutchman going into the afternoon session and continued where he left of with an 88 clearance in the 12th frame.
