Wright finished with England

Ian Wright has quit international football following the sacking of Glenn Hoddle as England coach

Ian Wright has quit international football following the sacking of Glenn Hoddle as England coach. The West Ham striker (35), praised Hoddle for resurrecting his England career and added: "For me, the England thing is over."

Wright, who was not named in the England squad to face France next Wednesday at Wembley - a squad picked by Hoddle - won 33 caps.

"I had a great understanding with Glenn," he said. "He gave me a real chance to prove my ability at the highest level and I took it.

"I battled against the odds to establish myself with England and feel if previous managers had shown the same belief in me as Glenn, I'd have done it earlier.

"This is the right time to call it a day at international level. For me, the England thing is over."

Leeds defender Lucas Radebe has labelled his experience under new England caretaker-boss Howard Wilkinson "the unhappiest time of my career".

Radebe admits he would have left Elland Road had Wilkinson remained in charge.

"I will always be grateful to Howard Wilkinson for giving me the chance to come and play in England," he said.

"But it is also true that I would have left the club to try my luck elsewhere if he had not been sacked.

"I can honestly say that it was the unhappiest time of my career when I played under Howard."

Hoddle's final act as England coach was to forgive Andy Cole for his past sins. The Manchester United striker is in the squad to face France, despite branding the England coach a coward last year.
