Journal Media plans ‘collaborative’ business app

New product will ‘solve specific problems’ for small companies and start-ups

Journal Media, the company behind digital news publisher the Journal, is planning a new business app that will have a focus on small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and start-ups. The company has a "shortlist of two" names for the venture, which will launch either in the fourth quarter of 2015 or the first quarter of next year.

"We made the decision last year to make an investment in the company to develop the sports offering a bit more and to develop a business app," says Journal Media's new chief executive Adrian Acosta. Since then, the company's sports app The Score has been renamed The42.

But the business app won't simply be a version of Business Etc, the business news feed tab on the Journal, he explains.

"It's going to look different. It cannot be the same as what we do in the Journal. It has to solve specific problems for that audience. Business journalism will be at its core, but it will take a collaborative approach."

Acosta says Journal Media, founded by brothers Brian and Eamonn Fallon, is “not just a media company, but a technology company”, and the business product will reflect that.

“It is very much in the works,” he says.
