It may be the end of April but baby it’s still cold outside. Let’s face it, it rarely gets warm enough in Ireland to repair outdoors without a sweater or a gas heater of some sort, especially in the evening. The hood variety of outdoor heater helped a generation make the most of their exteriors, but they’re now omnipresent and so past tense in a fashion sense.

Sartorialists who would like their outdoor heating to appeal aesthetically as well as physically will love the Athena flame heater that is burning a path direct to The Outdoor Scene (01-2960212 outdoor.ie) in Goatstown, Dublin 14. The heater measures 2.2 metres high and burns propane gas at an output of 9.3kw. The metal never gets hot, says The Outdoor Scene's Eamonn O'Hare, which is good news for parents.

The stainless-steel frame and side panel design looks elegant and offers both heat and light sources for after-dark get-togethers. The design looks especially dramatic if lined up in a row along a patio, but at €595 each most homeowners will have to content themselves with one.
