A man in his 30s was killed in a single car crash in Co Laois this morning.

Gardaí in Portlaoise are investigating the fatal collision that happened about 6.20am .

The man drove along the Ballyfin Road near Mountrath when his 4x4 vehicle hit into a pole at the side of the road.

Emergency services were called to the scene but the driver suffered fatal injuries and died in the ambulance on the way to the hospital.

His body was taken to Midland Regional Hospital in Portlaoise and a post mortem will be carried out.

The man was the only person in the vehicle.

The road has been reopened after it had been closed earlier today to allow for Garda Forensic Collision Investigators to examine the scene.
