Kilkenny's star hurler D.J. Carey will be among the speakers at an ecumenical conference on alcohol and young people in Cavan town next Saturday. Titled "Towards Changing the Culture - Alcohol Abuse and Young People", it will take place in St Patrick's College. The conference is being co-ordinated by the Kilmore Catholic diocesan pastoral council and the Church of Ireland in Kilmore diocese, with the support of Bishops Leo O'Reilly and Kenneth Clarke.
It will be opened by the Minister of State for Health and Children, Mr Brian Lenihan. Speakers include Mr John Lonergan, the governor of Mountjoy jail; Father Micheál MacGreil S.J., former lecturer in sociology at Maynooth, and the chairman of the board of management of the Pioneer Total Abstinence Association, and the Rev Gillian Wharton, from Rathdown School, Glenageary, Dublin, and a former youth officer with the Church of Ireland. Workshops will discuss topics such as "Coping with Young People - from their perspective", "Alcohol and Young People - What Can Parents Do?", "Supporting Young People" and "Coping/Surviving as Young People".
