LONDON - The Duchess of York told the man she once saw as her "best friend" that she would have committed suicide but for her daughters, Beatrice and Eugenie, her former confidant claims. The story of the duchess's desperate feelings is recorded in the book she hoped to ban, by Allan Starkie.
The book is said to describe how she turned into "a woman no longer quite in control" and "driven by fear and lust". She reportedly told Starkie: "If it weren't for the children the only answer would be to kill myself."
