Elderly woman dies in Co Cork fire

A woman in her 80s has died following a house fire outside Macroom in Co Cork.

The alarm was raised by the neighbours at Kilvoultra about two miles north of Macroom at about 7am.

The woman’s son and daughter had managed to escape from the blaze in the two-storey house. The woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

Members of the Cork fire fighting service attended the scene. Garda technical experts will carry out a forensic examination to establish the cause of the fire later today.

Gardaí say there is nothing at this stage to suggest the fire was deliberate and are treating it as a tragic accident.
