Heron: enterprising behaviour
Heron: enterprising behaviour

On a recent visit to Emo Court we came across an enterprising heron. Children were throwing bread into the lake for the ducks, and trout were darting at it. The heron swooped and came away with a fair-sized fish in its beak.

I've seen a redpoll, mistle thrush, some fieldfares and a collared dove. Are these usually city birds?

They come to forage in suburban gardens, particularly in winter.

The blackcap in our garden has proved to be a thug. She spends much of her day on or near the bird feeder and attacks any blue tit or finch that approaches.

Move your feeders. They may be in her territory.

I found a tiny bird, barely alive, with a yellow stripe on its forehead.

Firies, Co Kerry

It was a goldcrest, from your photo.
