Six people have been killed and a number of others have been injured in road crashes over the weekend.

Two men were killed last night when their car left the road and struck a tree in Co Kildare.

The single vehicle incident occurred on the Derrinturn-Allenwood Road (R403) at about 7.50pm last night.

The two men, aged 21 and 28, were fatally injured and were both pronounced dead at the scene. Their remains were taken to Naas General Hospital, and a postmortem is to be arranged.

The road was closed to facilitate Garda forensic collision investigators, and diversions are in place.

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses or anyone who was travelling in the area who may have information about the incident to contact them at Leixlip Garda station on 01 6667800, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666111 or any Garda station.

It has also been confirmed that a man injured in a single-vehicle crash in Co Meath yesterday morning has died.

The man, aged 22, died yesterday evening after the incident at Fennor Upper, Oldcastle, Co Meath, at 4am. Another man, aged 24, who was in the car is described as in a stable condition in hospital.

The vehicle hit a wall on the Oldcastle to Virginia Road, about 8km from Virginia. The two men were taken by ambulance to Cavan General Hospital.

Gardaí appealed for witnesses or anyone who may have been on the road between 3.30am and 4.15am yesterday morning to contact them in Kells on 046 9280820.

In Dublin, a man died after being hit by a car on James’s Street, close to Steeven’s Lane, at about 2.40am on Saturday, gardaí said. The 62-year-old pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene. The man driving the car (58) was treated for minor injuries.

In Co Down, a man in his 20s was killed in a single-vehicle crash on the Ballywalter to Greyabbey road on Saturday night.

In Co Cork, the Garda appealed for witnesses to a collision between two cars in Whitegate, near Midleton, on Friday evening. The 19-year-old driver of one car, Robbie Steele from Trabolgan Road in Whitegate, was fatally injured in the crash, on Refinery Road.

So far this year there have been 146 road deaths in the Republic, the Garda has confirmed. There were 147 road deaths, a difference of one, up to this date last year.
