A pre-dawn raid on the home former Bosnian Serb leader Mr Radovan Karadzic turned up a small number of firearms and forged documents.

The fugitive from the War Crimes Tribunal in the Hague was not discovered when a NATO-led force entered his home in his former wartime stronghold of Pale.

The raid was part of an investigation into illegal smuggling, NATO said in a statement.

There was no mention of Karadzic's whereabouts in the statement but a NATO official separately said the Bosnian Serb wartime leader was not arrested during the operation.
