A 56-year-old separated unemployed man was yesterday remanded on bail after he was charged with 72 counts of sexually abusing his son over a nine-year period.

The man, who can’t be named to protect the identity of the complainant, was charged with 36 counts of sexually assaulting the boy and 36 counts of buggery.

The offences are alleged to have happened at a location in north Cork between the start of 1982, when the boy was aged just five, and the end of 1990 when he was 13.

Yesterday at Fermoy District Court, Det Sgt Sean Leahy gave evidence of arrest, charge and caution and said the man replied “It’s all a pack of lies” after the charges were put to him.
