Vandals have destroyed a toilet crafted by a Russian artist for the EVA exhibition of visual art in Limerick. The object was rescued from the Shannon recently and returned to Barrington's Pier in Limerick City.

Vandals then burned the lavatory to the ground. The director of the Limerick City Gallery of Art, Mr Paul O'Reilly, dismissed suggestions that the toilet was a monument to the lack of interest in the 1996 EVA.

"There are a certain number of people who just don't know what's going on and their reaction is distrust and hatred", he said.
