Eight people have been arrested in connection with a violent brawl at a cemetery in Co Galway in September.
The seven men and one woman were detained on suspicion of violent disorder during the fight which broke out following a funeral in Tuam cemetery on September 22nd.
It is understood the violence stemmed from an ongoing dispute between two families in the area. Members of both families had been attending separate funerals in the cemetery before the violence.
Five men and two women were injured during the incident and taken to University Hospital Galway with non-life threatening injuries. One was airlifted to hospital in an Air Corps helicopter.
Several attendees received apparent stab injuries and at least one man was struck by a wooden cross which had been taken from a grave.
Gardaí were called to the scene and about 30 officers responded including local uniform and plain clothes personnel.
They were supported by gardaí from the wider North Western Region and the regional Armed Support Unit.
Gardaí said they had to physically intervene between parties and eventually dispersed those present and preserved the scene.
A male youth was arrested as he attempted to flee the scene in possession of a knife.
Gardaí said the latest arrests occurred during an operation on Monday morning by Galway gardaí investigating the incident.
The eight arrested people are aged between their mid 20s and mid 50s.
They are currently being detained for interview in various stations in Co Galway.
